Change your hair. Change your life!
I have two questions for you.
What makes you want to change your hairstyle or hair color? And if change has never called to you, why do you keep the same style and color year after year?
Hold both questions as you read. The answers might surprise you
The Psychological Impact
There is a popular saying that ‘Your hair is your crowning glory’ and a constituent part of someone’s overall beauty. A ‘bad hair day’ is not just about hair; it can lead to lower self confidence, self criticism, reduced performance at work and an inability to fully interact with others. It has a spotlight effect too. We tend to believe that others are criticizing our hair, even if most haven’t actually noticed.
After 43 years as a hair stylist and salon owner, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with thousands of people and witnessing the powerful relationship between how we look and how we feel. For more than 10 years, I have also been a Fashion Feng Shui®Facilitator. Learning Fashion Feng Shui® opened my eyes in a whole new way. It allowed me to see beyond hairstyles and trends and truly recognize how amazing people are and how deeply our personal style reflects our inner energy.
Throughout my career behind the chair, I’ve seen that hair changes are rarely just about hair. Often, they happen during moments of transformation—when someone is stepping into a new chapter, rediscovering themselves, or expressing something they may not even have words for yet.
When I first began studying Fashion Feng Shui®, I started to see personal style in a completely different way. Clothing, accessories, and even the colors we choose all carry energy. But one of the most powerful forms of expression is something many of us change time and time again throughout our lives—our hair.
Why Your Hair Really Matters
Hair frames our face, shapes how we present ourselves to the world, and often reflects something deeper that is happening inside us. Think back through the years and look at photos of yourself. How many different hairstyles or hair colors have you worn? Chances are, each one tells a story.
Maybe the changes were dramatic. Perhaps you wore your hair long for years and one day you decided to cut it short. At the time, it may have seemed like just a haircut, but when you look back, you might realize it happened during a moment of transition. Perhaps you were starting a new chapter in life, letting go of the past, or simply craving a sense of freedom. Many women change their hair when a long termrelationship comes to an end. It provides a sense of power and a release from the past.
Other times the change may have been in the texture of your hair. Maybe you wore it straight for years and then suddenly wanted curls, waves, or more movement. Texture can also reflect energy. Straight hair can feel structured and controlled, while curls often express playfulness, creativity, or a softer side of ourselves.
Color changes tell their own story as well. Have you ever felt like your natural color didn’t quite match how you felt inside? Perhaps your hair is brown, but deep down you always felt like a blonde. Lightening your hair with highlights or going fully blonde can reflect a desire to express excitement, adventure or elegance. On the other hand, darkening your hair may reflect a desire to feel more grounded or creative.
These choices are rarely random. Fashion Feng Shui® teaches that our external appearance often mirrors our internal intentions. Even when we are not consciously aware of it, we are aligning our outer image with how we want to feel or who we are becoming.
A Client Story
One long-standing client came to see me and showed me a photograph of herself from when she was younger. In the photo, she had dark hair, while for many years she had worn her hair as a light, warm blonde with highlights. She told me she wanted to return to dark hair. When I asked what had inspired the change, she shared that she was about to change her religion and step into a new era of her life. She had found a renewed sense of spirituality that brought her peace and clarity. When I asked why dark hair felt right, her answer was simple: it was time for change. Through the lens of the Five Elements, her intention aligned strongly with Water energy, which speaks to spirituality, depth, inner wisdom, and peace. By shifting her hair back to a deeper, darker shade, the transformation became more than cosmetic; it became a visible expression of the inner transition already taking place. When we finished, she not only looked younger, but more harmonious within herself.
Hair and Transition: What We Can Learn
When you look back at different phases of your life, you may notice that your hairstyle changed right along with you. Sometimes we make the change first, and our confidence follows. Other times, an inner shift happens first, and the new hairstyle becomes its outward expression—showing up in how we dress, carry ourselves, and move through the world.
Grey and silver hair, in particular, carry a quiet power. Whether embraced naturally or created intentionally, they reflect something deeply personal—evolution, clarity, or a sense of coming home to oneself. Choosing grey isn’t about fading; it’s about embodying Metal energy—stepping into a more refined, elegant, and graceful sense of self.
Brown hair, aligned with the Earth element, evokes comfort, stability, and nurture. Shades of red, representing Fire, bring a sense of fun, connection, and excitement. Blondes, connected to the Wood element, often reflect the doers, the pioneers, the competitors—those driven by growth and forward movement. And then there are the deep brunettes of the Water element—creative, mysterious, introspective, or perhaps simply desiring space and stillness.
I used to say that when I chose darker hair, I was in my “dark period”—a time of retreat, reflection, and setting new intentions. It wasn’t about hiding, but about recalibrating.
Understanding the Five Elements and their energetic qualities has helped me refine what a client truly needs from their hair. If your hair is your crowning glory, imagine how powerful and aligned you can feel when it reflects who you are—and who you are becoming—in this moment of your life.
So, let's return to those two questions I asked you at the beginning.
If you've been longing to change your hair, trust that instinct. Something in you is already shifting. Your hair simply wants to catch up.
And if you haven't changed your style in years? That's worth exploring too. It may mean your outer expression is already beautifully aligned with who you are. Or it may mean you've been playing it safe, and part of you is quietly ready for something new.
Either way, Fashion Feng Shui® gives you a language for what your hair has been trying to tell you all along. The next time you sit in that salon chair, or walk past your mirror, ask yourself not just how you want to look, but how you want to feel. Your hair is listening.
